“Electronic mobility – transportation concept of the future” - on 8th May 2001, this year’s e-day gave the go-ahead for a new era of Tempelhof Airport. The former airfield was symbolically handed over to the citizens of Berlin with an official opening event. In an area of over 70,000 square metres, the 200,000 expected visitors had the opportunity to see the Segways, e-bikes, e-scooters and e-cars right in front of their eyes and go on test rides.
The greatest hit was the Roadster Tesla (slogan: “Burn rubber, not gasoline”) from 0 to 100km/h in five seconds, the hangar literally flew past, then the first curve came…, no problem thanks to the traction control. In addition to the sporty, environmentally friendly gear, the 3.95 metre long and 1.13 metre flat Roadster has airbags, a cruiser, air conditioning, seat heaters and many electronic accessories, since rolling down the windows by hand would be excessive energy saving.
But there was another impressive vehicle on the course: Equipped with heavy motocross wheels and a huge motorbike structure on top, the eRockit has simply been given rocker status. But watch out: On the right and left where you usually find the foot rests of the motorbike, bicycle pedals jut out of the body. A mass-power accelerator rapidly transmits the pedal power to a multiple of the cycling power. A speed of 60 to 80km/h is easily reached - the e-Rockit speeds up really fast. But please, helmet and motorcyle-driving licence are a must.
Of course, there is a calmer way of moving. For instance, with the A2B hybrid bicycle, the light electrical folding bike by Gocycle and the life-style scooter Segway. The personal transporter (Segway PT, formerly HT for human transporter, and in some regional police organisations also called self-balancing scooter) moves into the direction to which the driver leans. Hopping on, leaning forward and the two big wheels start to roll. Automatic sensors prevent you from tilting. If you want to stop you just lean backwards.

Relaxed rolling with the Segway…
Ideal for sight-seeing, otherwise you would run your legs off. You are slightly elevated and consequently do not only have an overview of the traffic but also have time for interesting insights and views. It also makes sense as a shuttle service at trade fairs and conferences, thinks event manager Kitty van Aarlen of Select Caterin Berlin. Who does not know the long distances on exhibition sites? For incentives like guided group outings, Segways are surely a fun factor, too.
The contacts for the build-up of a rental fleet, which can be booked by groups of up to 100 persons per day, have been established. From the summer of 2010, organic caterer Select Catering – focussing on sustainable event concepts – will have Segways in the range in Berlin.
Are you interested in Segways or other vehicles? Please get in touch with us, we will be delighted to talk things through with you.

The huge XXL table football for 8 players is a must to warm up. Surely, one or the other tracksuit top is taken off. So, when one's favourite side-parting commentators get under way the Warsteiner Queen of Beers is not far off during the king's game of football. But if you feel like it, you can also have a Becks, Bitburger or Budweiser, or what about Leffe, Heineken, Mythos, Guiness or Quilmes bottles, which the Hand of God likes to hold in his hand?
